Leader as Coach

Coaching is the Number 1 skill for leaders; but it’s not just about using the skills in scheduled one-to-ones.

Coaching as a leadership style brings more “ask” into everyday conversations, empowering individuals to come up with the answers for themselves, to learn, stretch and grow. And it frees up valuable time and headspace for the leader.

Using a coaching leadership style creates the micro-climate for actively engaged teams. According to Gallup: “70% of the variance in team engagement is determined solely by the leader/ manager”.

It’s the micro-climate created by the leader that has the greatest impact on engagement. And engaged employees are more innovative, more committed and more productive – and they’ll start self-coaching.

Coaching as a leadership style is an essential component for any effective coaching or engagement strategy.

This program is key to our People strategy – using more “ask” and less “give” has changed the way our leaders have conversations.

Tailored solutions

Whilst all of our solutions are tailored to the specific needs of the client organisations, we’ve identified a magic formula which layers the what/ why/ how and when into effective and “stickable” behaviours.

Whatever the shape or format, our leader-as-coach workshops typically include:

  • Coaching and coaching style – what and why?
  • How: Core skills, frameworks exploration and practice
  • When/ where: Working the muscle – everyday opportunities
  • Building muscle memory – making it stick

And remember – a coaching style is infectious; once leaders start using it, their recipients will start self-coaching…and then modelling more “ask” in their own conversations. #winwin

Design principles

Our approach

We start with the end in mind – what do you want your leaders to know/ show as a result of the learning – and how will we measure it?

We’ll design sessions which meet the specific needs of the audience; recent examples include:

  • Modular series of half-day sessions to deliver a skills-build, followed by a follow-through “troubleshooting” session to support leaders in building fluency and credibility in their style
  • Stand-alone 2-day workshop with a follow-through “Working the Muscle” session to embed the learning/ develop fluency and tackle the inevitable “How do I..?” queries
  • Specific 2-day module within a 12 month leadership programme, designed to equip leaders with the coaching skills required to deliver all other aspects of their leadership

We’re passionate about Leader as Coach interventions; in our experience they’re the single biggest contributor to an organisation’s journey to a more inclusive, psychologically-safe culture.
